If you drop anchor at the town pier in the historical harbour you will be able to feel the city’s unique atmosphere. Those who have been here once will definitely come back again.
Location & Approach On the neat and very well organized shore of Genoa in western continental Italy, the marina Molo Vecchio fits perfectly in. It sits in the old harbor which is full of history and still reminds of times long ago when sailing ships brought home the goods of the empire. This means that sailors can experience a piece of that charm with the added bonus of modern facilities.
Although it sits in the old port, the marina is relatively new and so are the services it provides. That’s why the access to the marina is made on a 24h/day basis. The area of the harbor it can be found in is called the Expo, near the Cotton Warehouses (Magazzini del Cotone) in a rectangular area, surrounded on 3 sides by concrete piers, affording the maximum protection to vessels.
The coordinates for Molo Vecchio are 44°24',58 N 08°55',53 E and the navigation to the marina is a little bit tricky as opposed to other port cities. This is due to the fact that the Genoa port is protected by a long breakwater which runs parallel to the coast for a long distance, interrupted in several places in order to afford entrance to incoming boats.
Access is made via a 40m wide channel destined exclusively for pleasure boats. Hazards are represented by the shallow waters of the channel (ranging from 6 to 11m depth), the muddy seabed and the intense traffic in the harbor. Otherwise, most of the natural hazards are visibly and clearly marked for all skippers to see. The only wind a sailor should be mindful when mooring here is the tramontana. Be aware that the maximum speed in the access corridor is 6 knots and in the marina 3 knots.
Infrastructure & Ambience The marina can be contacted through radio before arrival on VHF channel 71 (from 7am to 9pm fr mooring assistance). Once in the marina there are 160 berths for you to choose from, for boats with a maximum length of 150m and the minimum length of 5m. Of course, all mooring spaces are equipped with water and electricity connections (2500A, 380V, 50Hz) but the marina offers guests much more: additional connections include telephone lines, Wi Fi internet and satellite TV.
Apart from the usual showers and toilets, the marina offers a wide range of customer services such as bars and restaurants, cinema, shopping center, swimming pool (open in summer), private health center and even a day-care center for infants.
For your boat, the marina can provide building and repair services, storage and garaging services in case you wish to winter your yacht here and a fuel supply.
The Genoa region is perfect for those tourists seeking a look into the old nautical heritage of the Italian Mediterranean. The city has a long and fruitful maritime heritage which is still visible today, with sights such as the Lanterna (the Lighthouse), the Bigo (derrick), the Magazzini del Cotone (Cotton Warehouses) as well as the Genoa Aquarium and the Palazzo San Giorgio. These are among the most famous, but rest assured that Genoa has plenty more to offer to those of you with a nostalgic feel.
