In this perfectly located marina in the harbour of Alghero, you can enjoy the remains of the day on the deck of your charter yacht anchored at the wall of the old town.
Location & Approach A relatively small but well equipped marina located on the western shore of Sardinia, near the town port of Alghero, the Sant Elmo marina is known among the community of regulars who are used to these shores. That’s because the marina is a perfect starting point for expeditions in the western Mediterranean, especially around the Balearics.
The exact position of the marina (coordinates 40º 34' N 8º 18' E) is south of the Port of Alghero, its berths sitting right under the old city walls. With 24/7 access and round the year service, the Sant Elmo marina is a serious contender to take into consideration. Especially since the services being offered here are considered to be five-stars.
The marina sits in the natural bay that also shelters the town port, adding further protection via its large breakwaters. The outer breakwater extends far away into the sea, having a rounded curve that brings it close to the other, smaller breakwater which is perpendicular to the shore. The entry to the marina is thus pointing to the north, making it safe for boats and crews regardless of the direction from which the wind is blowing.
The approach is made difficult when coming in from the north, from the island side by a couple of shoals and also shallow waters near the coast so make sure you keep your distance. There is also a small sand bank to the northwest of the entry point which rises above the waves and that is marked by a lighthouse.
Infrastructure & Ambience Though moderate in size, with just 100 berths, the marina is does boast excellent services for vessels up to 60m in length. There are water and electricity supplies for each berth which are accesed via a code-activated terminal, thus ensuring the fact that the client gets full privacy and security. Also for the security, the marina has a CCTV system monitoring the strollers along the traditional “passeggiata” because it has to be said that the Sant Elmo marina encourages the “open door” policy and allows people to take walks along its waterfront.
There is no boatyard and other related facilities on the marina grounds, but skippers can user the onsite 20t mobile crane and the mechanical and electrical repairs provided by the staff. For refueling, boats will have to head out of the marina into the harbor where there is a fuel station.
Other client related services being offered here are toilets and showers, wi fi internet, weather forecast service at the marina office, laundry service, an ATM and several banks in the neighborhood, a chandlery and a provisions supermarket also close to the marina.
An undeniable advantage of the Sant Elmo marina is its location right in the town center which affords visitors a plethora of visiting and dining opportunities, not to mention several transport options (taxi, car rental, ferry and an aiport).
There is plenty of sightseeing to be done in the region, the Grotte di Nettuno being first on any operator’s tour, the Nuragic Complex at Palmavera, as well as guided city tours. A very interesting pastime for enthusiasts is diving as there are several mini-submersibles that offer a look of the local sea floor.
