Located on Rugen island which is known as the summer retreat for most Germans, Lauterbach caters exclusively to the sailing community, since the harbor with the marina constitutes the focal point in town.

General Info
One of the resorts on Rugen island in the South Baltic Sea, Lauterbach is a small town in the southeast of the island that prides itself on its modern marina, which incidentally is the main reason tourists arrive here.

A quiet place for most of the year, Lauterbach becomes a busy port in summer when people come here looking for a place to moor their vessels, since all the other place on Rugen island quickly fill up. 1km away from Lauterbach, there is the small town of Putbus.

Embark on an extraordinary sailing adventure from the beautiful port town of Lauterbach, a gem on the shores of Rügen. Experience a blend of stunning nature, rich culture, and gastronomical delights that make every sailing trip from here an unforgettable experience.

Your sailing journey from the Baltic region's crown jewel lets you witness some truly unique landscapes. Marvel at Rügen's chalk cliffs, emerging majestically from the sea and etching a splendid panorama against the sky. These chalk formations are part of the Jasmund National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, boasting ancient beech forests that will make you feel as if you've stepped into a fairy tale.

To further explore Rügen's natural bounty, don't miss the chance to sail around the island's lagoons, enveloped in serene silence, broken only by the faint calls of migratory birds. The Western Pomerania Lagoon Area National Park offers stunning views and rare wildlife sightings that make for a fantastic day amidst nature.

Travel & Arrival
The island of Rugen is the holiday destination for many sailors, be they German or from other countries. Most of the natives arrive here by land, using the bridge in Stralsund that connects Rugen island with mainland Germany. The main road in is the E251 which goes all the way into Bergen auf Rugen, the island’s capital. From there, in order to get to Lauterbach, one has to take the L301 road to Putbus and from there, go further east into Lauterbach, right on the shore.

There is also the option of arriving by train, since the city of Putbus is famous for its Racing Roland, a picturesque bit of track, that actually runs all the way down to Lauterbach harbor, which means the crew can get straight to the water if it chooses the train.

Since Rugen Island is such a popular destination, it’s possible to arrive at a major city airport such as Berlin or Hamburg and still arrive in under 3 hours transfer time.

By water, there are several ferries linking the island with a series of Nordic countries. There are links from Trelleborg in Sweden, Gedser in Denmark, Klaipeda in Lithuania and even St. Petersburg in Russia. The connections from the different parts of the island are by train.

Avant & Apres Sail
Though the city of Lauterbach itself doesn’t have that historical or cultural appeal, the neighboring city of Putbus does make up in that department. The most famous landmarks and the most visited by arrivals are the circus and the theater. Interestingly enough, the whole town of Putbus was built by a German count in 1833 and is considered an architectural experiment which should be visited.

Outside of town, there’s the beautiful island and bird sanctuary of Vilm, which is also accessible by water so sailors should have no problem. This is said to be one of the wildest and most pristine landscapes in Germany since it was reserved for the GDR political figures who were the only one allowed to build holiday homes on the island.

The shopping experience in town is modest to say the least, but the accessibility and short distances to other towns on the island, such as Bergen, ensures that you’ll go home from your trips with at least one souvenir.

Events & Actions
Well, sailing is by far the main activity here in Lauterbach, and the large marina is a testament to that. But there’s much more to this location. There are lots of sandy beaches, sure, but if you take the time to explore the island, you’ll find many interesting and old places, as well as many sporting activities. explorers can have a great time wondering around the South Baltic Sea. In June, they can enjoy the “Around Vilm” regatta and in July the Goor Cup.
