Destination – Nature conservation archipelago Cabrera

The nature conservation archipelago with the main island Cabrera is much appreciated among sailors and divers. You can stay over night very secure at one of the reserved moorages. (Permit!)

From the port of Cala Figuera you sail just some 17 sea miles to the south-west to the Cabrera group of islands. The archipelago consists of 18 small islands. The whole area is a nature conservation area since 1991, when blocking of the waters around Cabrera caused storms of protest by many leisure navigation associations.

Today, 50 yachts can anchor at the main bay Puerto de Cabrera with special allowance, and 8 yachts at the bay Cala es Burri. The necessary permission can be ordered at Ministerio de Medio Ambiente in Palma de Mallorca free of charge, at least 2 weeks before the planned visit. Your charter company can order the permission for you.

The main island Cabrera (which means “island of goat”) is inhabited by a few fishers, soldiers and keepers. The water quality in the bays of Cabrera is unique. Starting from Cala Figuera at the early morning or forenoon, you can sail to the bay Cala es Burri first to spend some hours bathing and snorkelling in its crystal clear water. Then, you sail to the Puero de Cabrera, where you can moor at one of the buoys to stay overnight.

At the small mole, there’s a tavern run by soldiers and offering simple food and beer. You can also bring your own bottle of wine and arrange a “cork fee”! The next morning you can take a free guided tour around the island and visit the castle and the museum. You will also get elaboration of seldom plants and animals on Cabrera.

Before sailing back to Majorca’s southern coast, you can anchor in front of the bay Cala Ganduf with the Grotta Azul. The whole bay is closed for ships, but you can reach the cave by dinghy.
