Samos was first inhabited around 3000 B.C. In the ancient times, the island was an important trading centre and therefore of great importance for shipping. Besides, the island wad famous for its red polished ceramics, which were even imitated by the Romans. Nowadays, Samos is proud of numerous ruins of the ancient architecture. Thanks to the Meltemi wind, blowing from the north-eastern direction, the hot summer months can be easily endured here.
