Ibiza and Formentera - Islands of Ambience and Style
Lying in the western Mediterranean Sea, the Balearic Islands are an attractive spot for a passionate yachtsman. The area around Majorca, Minorca, Ibiza and Formentera where one can sail all year round is a real highlight for every sailing fan. The region’s climate is influenced by the Azorean anticyclone which is a guarantee of a good weather and one of the reasons why this place is that popular with sailors. Ibiza and Formentera are also often referred to as „two cute sisters“ by the locals. They are situated 43 sea miles away from the Spanish mainland.
Because of numerous enchanting white houses and churches, Ibiza is also referred to as the „white island“. Sailing by a yacht is the best way to explore Ibiza’s bays. Known as a mecca for hippies in the sixties, in the seventies, it became a meeting point of the rich and beautiful. After Ibiza established itself as the party island par excellence in the nineties, nowadays more and more families with children head for the both islands. The islanders are very open-minded and cosmopolitan. Those who decide to spend their holiday on board a sailing or motor yacht will be rewarded with a wonderful scenery featuring lovely small bays, bizarre rocky cliffs and spectacular steep coasts. For sailors hankering for rest and relaxation, the quiet Formentera with its intact nature, fantastic beaches in the island’s north and east, and gold-shimmering rocks is the ideal place to sail. The name Formentera derives from the Latin word „frumentarium“ (wheat supplier) which perfectly matches this island that is still characterized by its rather rural way of life.
Between Ibiza and Formentera, there are the lawns of Posidonia located in the nature reserve of Ses Salines. The fields of sea weed are part of UNESCO World Heritage and house rare animal species found only in the Mediterranean basin. Seagrass fields not only serve cleaning the water but also provide protection for the coast being a natural barrier. An excursion is absolutely worthwhile. If you would like to take a longer trip by your yacht you should head for Palma. Majorca’s glamorous capital is situated about 60 sea miles away. For this purpose you should schedule a one day or night journey.
