Skiathos Greece

View over the roofs of Skiathos to the harbor.

The island Skiathos, which belongs to the Sporades group of islands, is situated off the gulf of Volos and is scenically very attractive because of the gorgeous stone pine forests on its shores. The neighbouring island Euboa lies about 5 ½ sea miles away. Skiathos is definitely worth visiting, especially for its beautiful long sand beaches. The island was first inhabited by the Ionian 1000 B.C. In the Middle Ages, the island was occupied by the Byzantine and later by the Ventians. Finally, in 1538 the island came under the rule of the Turks. Only in 1828 it was returned to Greece. The climate of the Sporades is perfect for easy sailing, as the Meltemi wind here does not reach its normal strengh as in the south. Mostly, the wind is blowing from the north-east, however, changing its direction between the islands due to the channels.
