Sailing in Angra dos Reis

To the south from Rio de Janeiro, one of the most beautiful stripes of the 8 thousand km long Brazilian coast is located. The 1700 m high mountains of Serra do Mar reach the sea here and outline the magnificent bays with innumerable small and large, inhabited and uninhabited islands. In the Gulf of Angra dos Reis, various tropic islands with rich Flora and Fauna are scattered and wait to be explored. The idyllic “Ilha Grande”, which lies only 100 km away from Rio de Janeiro and hardly twelve sea miles away from the continent, covers about 200 square km and has only a few thousand inhabitants. A third part of its territory is a nature reserve. Its more than 100 beaches and bays are largely free from mass tourist attacks and week-end holiday-makers. Even the centre of the town Parati with protected monuments is closed for cars.

Parati belongs to the most beautiful colonial towns of Brazil. Once this town became rich through its port and the shipment of gold and coffee. Now tourism is its primary source of income.
