Madagascar's Nosy Be

Nosy Be is a perfect island in the tropics

Nosy Be, an excellently developed island, is situated just off the west coast of Madagascar. Considering the island’s  goodly dimensions, we can rather speak of the quality of tourism on Nosy Be than of its quantity so far. Thus, it is a perfect location for yachties searching for a natural paradise. You can get there by ferry, for instance from Antsahampano. However, there is also an airport on the island. The island is of volcanic derivation and thus looks a little different than the islands located nearby. Walking across the island charter tourists won‘t overlook the lush plantations full of sugar cane, ylang-ylang and coffee as well as vanilla and clove plantations. Due to its fertile soil, at the latest since the 15th century, Nosy Be has been a coveted place. Sailing

Nosy Be is a sailors paradise

Before, the island was inhabited by Indian and Comorian merchants as well as by the tribe of Antankarana. The first permanent settlement was established by the Indian castaways five kilometres to the East of the island’s main town Hell-Ville (Andoany) – today, one can still see its ruins there. In the meantime, British settlers had made an attempt to occupy the island as a colonial base which, however, was without success because of the inhabitants‘ superiority. In 1841, the island was finally integrated into the French colony. Walking in the island’s capital one will immediately notice the magnificent buildings reminding of the colonial period. If you take a trip into the interior you will be able to see the seven craters filled with water which are distributed over the island. Caution: the lakes are inhabited by crocodiles.
The biggest treasure of the island housing 20,000 people are its fascinating, mostly reddish coloured beaches. Bordered by coconut palms, they provide unique scenery for experienced charter travellers.
