The 86 square kilometres big island is the main island of the Cyclades. Among its sister islands, the island of Syros has the densest population of 20 thousand inhabitants. Syros has a long history starting in the early Cycladic times around 2000 B.C. During some periods the island was reigned by the Venetian and the Turks. As the name Syros indicates (Syros means rocky), the island surface is mountainous with poor vegetation. The biggest part of the island inhabitants live in the south, around the capital town Ermupolis. The northern part of the island is sparsely inhabited. The best bathing bays attracting many sailing crews are also situated in the south of the island. An important economic factor of the region is the shipyard “Neorion” specializing in maintenance and repair of big ships. The oldest archaeological museum of Greece is situated in the old town of Ermupolis and is worth visiting as well as the Apollo Theatre from 1861, which is often referred to as the small version of the Milan Scala.
