If you want to be undisturbed enjoying the whole beauty of Greece, the forth biggest of the Ionian islands is the best place to do this. Lefkas is situated to the north-west from the peninsula of Peloponnesus and is connected with the mainland by a swing bridge. The island fascinates its visitors by the gorgeous bathing and relaxing spots. At the same time, there are attractive walking routes on the island. The highest mountain is the peak of Elati, being 1158 metres high. In the interior, especially in the southern end of the island, there are many fertile valleys. The first inhabitants came to island from Corinth in the 6th century B.C. In the medieval times, Lefkas was a fleet base and belonged to the Byzantine Empire. Then it was conquered by the Turks and the Venetians. In 1864 Lefkas got united with the Kingdom of Greece.
