Ormos Phoinikos – Perfect for a Stopover

Location & Approach
The island of Syros is located in the central Aegean and is part of the Cyclades group of islands, a haven of sailors from all over the world who like coming to Greece. The marina Syors can be found just near the commercial harbor on the east coast of the island in a large natural bay that is protected from the sea thanks to a couple of long breakwaters, which create a narrow opening in the middle of the bay.

The main town on the island, Syros Ermoupolis, is located just to the northwest of the marina. The coordinates for the marina are Latitude: 37°25.82 N Longitude: 24°56.50 E. The approach to the marina is sheltered by the position of the piers and the added breakwaters, one perpendicular to the shore, from north to south and one perpendicular to that, from west to east. skippers should be aware of occasional meltemi strong gusts from the north.

Water depth at the entry of the marina ranges from 2 to 4m, the anchoring being stern to pier. Addional mooring places can be found in the port to the north, in the northern part. The entry is marked by flashing green and red lights.

Infrastructure & Ambience
The Syros marina is not one of the luxurious places, but it does offer minimum conditions for guests, such as water, toilet and shower facilities and water electricity connections. And considering that it’s open all year round and that it’s the perfect base for exploring the Cyclades, Syros marina does enjoy a significant number of yachts.

Also in the marina, there is a reception, a restaurant, a café, a car rental station and a supermarket just outside the marina. The fact that it’s close to the town and the airport affords additional services to the arrival, such as banks, ATMs, a postal service and a laundry service.

The whole island of Syros is a good tourist attraction, considered by many as the cultural center of the Aegean, with many museums, neoclassical mansions and aristocratic resorts. Largely Catholic, the population welcomes great numbers of foreign tourists every year, especially from Western Europe.
