Marina Piccola – Elegant Marina with a Lot of Comfort

Location & Approach
A particularly small marina on the picturesque southern coast of Sardinia, near the major town of Cagliari, Marina Piccola is located in the Quartu cove, an inlet in the Gulf of Cagliari. Recently renovated and enlarged, the marina now offers mooring and services to those interested in cruising the central Mediterranean and the Sardinian coasts.

The coordinates of the marina are 39° 11´ N  09°  10´  E, more precisely on the northeastern side of the promontory of S. Elia Cape which can quickly spotted from out at sea thanks to a dismantled tower at the top. The marina can be seen at the foot of the hill called Sella del Diavolo (Saddle of the Devil). If the name sounds ominous, don’t worry about it, legend has it that this saddle shaped hill was formed when the Archangel Gabriel hurdled the devil onto it.

The marina is protected by two small breakwaters, one curved on the east side (red flashing light) and a smaller one (green flashing light) closing in the gap and forming the entry point from the west. The entrance to Marina Piccola faces to the northwest, towards the mainland in order to protect it from any waves or currents forming out to sea that could enter the marina and jeopardize the vessels moored there.

There are piers all along the eastern breakwater up to the entry point where the water is 3m deep and all along the coast where the water reaches a maximum depth of 2.5m. Among the hazards for approaching   sailors there is a sand bar towards the northeast, 50m outside the harbor and 70m northwest there is a sandbank where the water depth decrease to about 1.5m.

Visiting boats are moored in special transit quays (when available) and can stay for a maximum of 5 days. Among some other restrictions are anchoring and fishing all along the Quartu cove due to the fact that there are underwater cables all along the sea bed in the area.

Infrastructure & Ambience
The berths of the marina all have electricity and water connections but there are many more facilities in the marina itself, such as toilet and showers, a grocery store, a chandlery store, a gas bottle replacement facility and public telephones.

skippers looking for a boatyard, can find boat repair facilities here that operate minor and medium repairs with the help of slip ways, a crane with a 20t limit. Further assistance is offered by the marina staff which can help you with mooring, or by the nautical clubs operating in the region, managing yachting and windsurfing activities.

Sardinia is a great location for those looking to explore the Mediterranean, simply because of its position close to the Italian peninsula, Corsica, Sicily and even the African coast. looking for a place that offers quality sailing and also has a good infrastructure should really take into consideration the island of Sardinia.
