Marina Alimos (Kalamaki) – Starting Point for Expeditions Along the Greek Coast

Though not a five-star location since this is a public marina, Alimos Kalamaki makes up for the lack of services and quality with great accesibility and a great position near the outskirts of Athens.

Marina Alimos (Kalamaki) – Starting Point for Expeditions Along the Greek Coast

Location & Approach
Marina Alimos is the biggest in Greece with 1000 permanent berths and one of the best positioned since it lays in the southern part of Athens, just minutes from the Piraeus port, the busiest in Greece. For many skippers it turns into the perfect base for exploring this part of the Greek coast and the Mediterranean.

More to the point, this artificial gulf can be found on the northeastern shore of the Saronic Bay, overlooking the Attica Basin. Just 15km from the city center, 8km from Piraeus and 30km from the Athens International airport, it enjoys a privileged position, made easily accessible to all travelers by means of shuttles, trams, busses and taxis.

Its overall shape is that of a parallelogram, with 2 breakwaters to the south and north, opening up for visitors with an entry point towards the northwest. The coordinates for the marina entry are 23º 42' 03'' east, 37º 54' 68'' north, while the coordinates for the marina are 23º 01' east, 37º 52' north. The local hazards are the reef of Aghios Cosmas, southeast of the entrance which is pretty difficult to spot at night and the Mermingia rocks situated 4-5 miles southeast of the marina in the direction of Cape Sounio.

Infrastructure & Ambience
The huge number of berths of the marina (over 1000 permanent berths) means that you can always be sure you’ll find a mooring place for your boat here. However, services and facilities provided here aren’t up to the usual standard found in so many other marinas across the Mediterranean. Alimos can handle boats up to 40m in length, its berths having a maximum depth of 6.5m more than enough of for even the biggest parties.

Some of the berths have water and electricity supply, there is an extensive car park where you can leave your car; there is a radio service (channel 71 UHF), first aid provisions and hot showers and toilets. There is no supermarket on the marina grounds which makes provisioning for crews somewhat difficult – there is a supermarket just across the street from the marina.

There are also a few restaurants nearby, including some Greek and Italian places, including some venues that deliver straight to your boat. Inside the marina you’ll only find a snack bar which doubles as a coffee shop but has rather steep prices. A cheaper option would be any of the fast food chains which can be found all within 5-10 minutes of walking. It really depends on the budget of your holiday.

For fun purposes there is a night club built within the marina grounds, catering to the after dark party needs of the sailors, though on  Friday nights the loud music can get annoying for people just looking to relax.
