Venice - The City on the Water
For 600 years Venice has been one of the most romantic and desirable tourist destinations in the world. Dubbed “The Queen of the Adriatic”, Venice manages to attract millions of tourists every year, out of which there are also significant numbers of yacht enthusiasts who come here for some of the best yacht charter in Italy. The lagoon, the canals, the gondolas, they all make Venice one of the most easily recognizable holiday resorts.
General Info
Venice’s name is synonymous with a romantic holiday and it’s so popular in fact that annually, there are more tourists staying here than there are residents. Still, more than just a pretty town by the Italian Adriatic Sea, Venice is a famous Yacht Charter destination that draws millions each year to the shores of the lagoon it sits on and that has remained unchained for some 600 years.
Venice has managed to maintain its Renaissance look, though in later decades the overall architecture has decayed. The Yacht Charter tourist might also be interested in the 118 islands out to sea that make up the various district of Venice.
Travel & Arrival
Though not the most popular means of transportation, arriving by air is possible in Venice. All the Yacht Charter traveler has to do is look for a flight landing at Marco Polo Airport near Mestre, or the Treviso Airport just 25 km, which is smaller but with low-cost providers such as Ryanair, SkyEurope and Transavia.
Despite the fact that cars are not allowed into the city itself, arriving Yacht Charter tourists choose to drive here on the SR11 which connects to the A4 highway further inland. Parking beyond the western part of town is impossible as there are no roads from here. However, here you’ll find the Tronchetto which is Europe’s largest car park.
All trains arriving to Venice pass through Mestre so you shouldn’t confuse this top with the Santa Lucia train station which is where you actually want to stop. From here there are water buses (vaporetti) or water taxis taking Yacht Charter sailors to the city.
Avant & Apres Sail
One of the pleasant facts about Venice is that it’s entirely a pedestrian city. That means you can get the full experience but it also means that when your Yacht Charter group tires you can’t call for a cab, unless it’s a water taxi. Here are some of the most important landmarks you should visit while in Venice: Basilica di San Marco, Piazza San Marco, San Giovanni e Paolo, Santa Maria dei Miracoli, the Correr Museum, the Doge’s Palace, La Fenice Theater, Jewish Ghetto of Venice, Jewish Museum, the Glass Museum, the Lace Museum and the Rialto Bridge.
The local food actually has its own name – the Veneto – and the restaurants here specialize in Veneto dishes. The prices however will burn holes in your pockets very quickly so keep an eye out for pricing as Venice is one of the more expensive Italian cities. Fruit stalls, cake shops and ice cream parlors seem to always impress the Yacht Charter crowds.
And speaking of your budget, here are some things you should definitely pick up from Venice: the famous Venetian masks, leather products (gloves, bags etc.), antiques, furniture and high fashion of course. The main shopping streets filled with Yacht Charter people are Piazza di San Marco and Rialto, Frezzeria and Accademia Bridge.
The nightlife is certainly worthy of the town’s reputation and the fun-searching Yacht Charter seaman should have no problem in finding a watering hole for a good time. Local drinks such as the Spritz, Grappa and the Bellinni are famous with locals and tourists alike though a bit overpriced.
Events & Actions
Venice is a virtual heaven for Yacht Charter lovers. Starting from April and all the way through September there is a myriad of regattas. Even if many are spontaneous much to the delight of the tourists, there are also official regattas you’ll see every year, like the Historical Regatta every first Sunday of September. There is also the Voga Longa rowing marathon which coincides with a festival.
As far as activities here go, most people just want to ride a gondola on the narrow canals, wonder about the city, shop, eat by the water and see the famous carnivals. And incidentally, these are the most intersting activites a Yacht Charter sailor can engage in while here.
