Punat has a long tradition of water sports. Nowadays, the location is extremely popular both with sailors and with wakeboarders, but don't underestimate the region's cultural and natural potential either. You'll find some very nice museums and churches as well as some breathtaking landscapes when visiting Punat.
General Info
Located on what is considered by many the most beautiful island in Croatia – Krk, Punat has a very good reputation throughout the Adriatic, not just for the beauty of its setting, but also for the calm waters of the bay, which are always appreciated by Yacht Charter skippers sailing their boats here.
Inhabited from prehistoric times, the region seems to be getting its name from the Latin “Pons” meaning bridge, as the island in the middle of the bay could have been connected to the mainland by a bridge in the past. The local activities have been agriculture, olive growing, fishing, sheep breeding and shipbuilding, the remnants of which can still be seen today by Yacht Charter visitors.
Travel & Arrival
Located on the south part of the Krk Island, Punat is nonetheless accessible from all points. Air travel is made easy by the presence of the Rijeka airport on the island, which lies just 32 km to the north, close to the mainland. Most of the traffic here is made up of European low cost airlines, which means that flying to Krk won’t blow a hole in your Yacht Charter budget.
By road, Punat is reachable by the E65 coastal road, which turns into the 102 national road once you’re on the island. From there, simply follow it into town, there’s only one intersection, branching into the 104 heading west. Also, you could catch one of the buses linking Rijeka to Punat, taking numerous Yacht Charter groups on the south side of the island.
There are no direct ferries to Punat, but just like with the plane ride, you could take a ferry to neighboring Rijeka and then continue by road. Rijeka is linked with Italian cities like Ancona or other Croatian cities such as Zadar, Split, Hvar or Dubrovnik.
Avant & Apres Sail
Famous throughout the entire Croatia, the Franciscan monastery Kosljun on the islet with the same name is one of the oldest and most prestigious cultural buildings of the region, with an impressive ethnographic collection, folk costumes collection and a zoological collection, all inside a museum open for Yacht Charter visitors.
The other important attraction in town, and certainly a hotspot for Yacht Charter sailors is the marina, which is not only one of the oldest in the east Adriatic, but also one of the biggest and most prestigious, earning numerous prizes along the years. It’s also the center of activity when it comes to water sports, which are very popular around here: anything from diving, water skiing and windsurfing can be practiced here.
Restaurants are something Punat has a lot of. At every street corner you’ll find a good restaurant that will tempt you with local aromas. Good food and fine wines is something that the Yacht Charter tourists can enjoy here on a daily basis. You’ll have to try the home made pastry with wine goulash, as well as the wide assortment of fish and sea food dishes, complemented by olive oil.
The night time entertainment really depends on what your idea of a good time is. Of course, for a quiet night, you can spend a few hours in a nice bar, having drinks with friends, but if you’re looking for a more eventful evening, just head out to neighboring Malinska or Krk, where you’ll find discos and clubs full of Yacht Charter crowds.
Events & Actions
People come to Punat to enjoy the sea, there’s no doubt about that, and there’s plenty of these to go around. Of course, there are the ones along the coast, which can be either sandy or pebbly, but there are also those isolated ones that can only be reached by taxi boats.
And because sailing and water sports are held in such high regard here, it was only natural that the locals held a regatta at the marina, with a tradition going back to 1984, part of the Croatia Cup.
