Portoroz - The Best Known Holiday Resort in Slovenia
With its modern architecture and facilities, with its thermal baths and lovely beaches, Portoroz is aiming at becoming one of the best known locations on the Adriatic coast. It’s also helped by its relative proximity to the Italian and Croatian borders, thus making it accessible to foreign tourists as well
General Info
If a name like “Port of Roses” does not appeal to you, then you should know that the Slovenian Yacht Charter resort with the same name is fast becoming one of the best tourist ports of the Adriatic Sea.
Despite it not having the charm of the old Mediterranean towns, Portoroz has many modern facilities to compensate and it attracts a younger demographic from the European elite. You’ll feel right at home here among other Yacht Charter enthusiasts who sail to this location every year.
Travel & Arrival
While Portoroz is serviced by an airport, it’s quite small and only operates charter flights so there’s a slim chance your Yacht Charter party will be landing here. Instead, you can get here via the Ronchi Airport in Italy, 80 km away, or from Ljubljana Airport situated at a distance of 145 km.
The location is very easily accessible by car, as it’s very close to Italy and Croatia. Only 32 km separate the Yacht Charter tourist from the Italian border and 30 km from the Slovenian motorway. There are also bus transports available, the bus station being located in the heart of the city.
With a modern marina so close to the town center, there are so many people coming in by sea. Boat trips with Portoroz as their destination leave from Piran, Strunjan, Izola, Koper and Ankaran in Slovenia, Venice and Brioni in Italy as well as from Croatia.
Avant & Apres Sail
The Casino and the numerous spas in the region take up most of the architecture of Portoroz, a town that began its development late during the 19th century. For those Yacht Charter adventurers looking for a historical building or artifact, a better solution would be the neighboring town of Piran and its saltflats.
Hotels and convention centers make up the rest of the local buildings. But the Terme & Wellness LifeClass Portoroz facility is the reason so many European Yacht Charter guests choose this town for their holiday.
Local restaurants serve Istrian cuisine, which is a combination of vegetables, meats and seafood served with generous amounts of wine from the neighboring countryside. The best restaurants are found in the big hotels, but there are also some good establishments around the marina, frequented by Yacht Charter sailors.
Since the local tourist population is mainly formed of younger people, the nightlife in Portoroz is bustling with activity. There are pubs, clubs, discos and there’s always the casino to draw up Yacht Charter crowds until the early hours of the morning.
Actions and Events
Apart from the religious events that take place here on Saints’ days, Portoroz also hosts one of the biggest international boat shows in the region that’s bound to attract some of the local Yacht Charter sailors. The Internautica as it’s called takes place in the first weeks of May and features exhibits from 200 local companies and from neighboring countries as well.
There is also a yearly tennis event, the International Women’s Tennis Tournament WTA, taking place every September in the town’s central stadium which can seat up to Yacht Charter visitors.
