Truly a place where you’ll find something for everyone, Vancouver has been blessed with a stunning natural setting, right between a mountain range and the Pacific ocean, making it the perfect holiday destination for those who can’t make up their mind which one they love more
General Info
The largest urban agglomeration of people in British Columbia, Vancouver is known worldwide for its beauty and the quality of life here. While still a relatively young city with a history no longer than 100 years, Vancouver still has a lot to offer to any Yacht Charter visitor, starting with the landscape (the city is nestled in between the Pacific Ocean and the Coast mountains on the Burrad Peninsula).
Travel & Arrival
With a population of over 2 million people, Vancouver is serviced by YVR International Airport, located just outside of the city. Yacht Charter travelers usually come from other locations in British Columbia, the United States, Asia and Europe. Canadian, American and European airlines such as Lufthansa, British Airways fly here on a regular basis. The terminals are linked with the city via public transport, shuttle busses, taxis and even limousine services.
By land, Vancouver is accessible via Highway 1 (also called the Trans-Canada) which connects with the eastern part of the city. Coming in from the US, the Yacht Charter tourist will need to take the Highway 99 connecting with the American Interstate 5. Bus transportation into town is also possible, with Greyhound, Quick Coach and Pacific Coach Lines operating in the region.
Travelling in by train, the Yacht Charter crews will arrive downtown, at Pacific Central Station. This is recommended for those who want to take the scenic route as the lines pass through the picturesque Canadian Rockies.
Water travel is also possible in the city’s big harbor. For incoming Yacht Charter parties there are ferries, cruise ships and even a floatplane service that makes trips around the bay.
Avant & Apres Sail
Due to its young age, Vancouver has the convenience of having most of its important landmarks in the downtown area. However, there are a few that are outside this region, such as Stanley Park, a big hit with most Yacht Charter boatmen, as is the Vancouver Aquarium, both of them in West End.
Yacht Charter enthusiasts who want to learn something might want to check out the Museum of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia, the Art Gallery, the Public Library, the Contemporary Art Gallery and the Telus World of Science.
Food here comes in various shapes and price ranges, for every Yacht Charter visitor’s taste buds and pockets. Most restaurants can be found downtown or grouped in West End catering to a more pretentious crowd. For ethnic food head to East Van, where you’ll find the famous dim sum restaurants (the large Chinese community here have turned this dish into a world famous recipe).
High end shopping can be found in the city’s business district, on Robson Street, Pacific Center, Gastown, Yaletown and Commercial Drive. For those Yacht Charter tourists seeking some of the more colorful souvenirs, some good places to shop would be Chinatown and Punjabi Market.
The nightlife is centered around the central area of town, with most nightclubs, bars and cafes lined up along Granville Street. Of course, every neighborhood has its own watering hole where the tired or fun-seeking Yacht Charter sailor can take a load off or blow some steam.
Events & Actions
The best way to take in such a large city would be to get on any of the guided tours which all start downtown. If you’re more the outdoorsy type, then get your Yacht Charter party up to the Seawall where you can jog, run, rollerblade and bike ride with the locals.
Sun lovers will surely check out the local beaches which are located around Kitsilano. Here the Yacht Charter guests will surely enjoy the great number of water sports that are available. The one good thing about Vancouver is when you tire of the sea, you can always take to the mountains, as skiing and snowboarding are favorite pastimes around here. The locals all head outside of town, to the “Three hills” – Cypress, Grouse Mountain and Seymour which are to be found across the harbor, on the North Shore.
For a great and colorful event, make sure your Yacht Charter group gets to Vancouver around the Chinese New Year, because then you’ll have something to see. In June, there is the Annual Dragon Boat Festival on False Creek.
A more black tie event is the Vancouver International Film Festival running from September through October. There is also a theater festival called Fringe Festival, and a three-day Folk Fest by the beach in Kitsilano. For those Yacht Charter enthusiasts who really like to party, the annual Vancouver Pride Parade on August 2nd is an event which regularly attracts thousands of people.
