Rodney Bay - Next to Paradise

Pigeon Island is situated in front of the north-western coast of St. Lucia. It is connected with the main island by an artificial causeway. In 1985/1986 a long sand beach was hydraulically pumped away and the whole area including the swampland behind the beach was rearranged as the Rodney Bay marina with summer cottages and moorings for yachts. Historically, Pigeon Island is quite interesting too. There are many traces of the former colonies of the redskin Arawak, who once lived on the island. The fortification from the year 1778 includes a small museum, which is worth visiting. This was the place where Admiral Rodney started for his coquering battle against the French fleet in Guadeloupe in 1782. Walking through the northern part of the island you will be impressed by the variety of colours of the plants and flowers in the front gardens of the houses. The houses themselves are also colourfully painted, making it all in all to a very pricturesque place – the typical reflection of the Caribbean lifestyle. There are many international banks on the island, so you will not have problems with getting cash. There is a small mall in the centre of the town where you will find a post office, a pharmacy, a dentist and a general practinioner, internet cafes as well as good shopping possibilities. One of the most beautiful beaches on the island is the Reduit beach in the Rodney bay, which is publicly available.
