Genoa – From Communal Republic to Metropolis
Although Genoa is one of Italy‘s largest cities, a trip to the northern metropolis is absolutely worth it. You shouldn’d miss the chance of visiting its historical centre. The monumental architecture, historical palazzi, glamorous shops – this is what constitutes Genoa’s unique atmosphere. Charter tourists can also spend their time in the large area of the harbour that was extensively renovated at the beginning of the nineties. By the way, the leading architect of this project was the same man who designed the new Potsdamer Platz in Berlin. The reason for renovating was the 500th anniversary of discovering America by Christopher Columbus who is considered Genoa’s most famous citizen. The absolute highlight is Europe’s largest sea-water aquarium which houses 5,000 animals. Its column-shaped, several metres high aquariums with deep-sea jellyfish astonish not only its little visitors. The main sights of the Old Town are St. Lawrence Cathedral with its numerous treasures as well as Via Garibaldi which is Genoa’s pedestrian zone. Wonderful palaces on both sides of the street form two seemingly endless chains. On Largo della Zecca, there is the lower station of the funicular railway which brings you to the lookout point Righi which is located 300 metres higher. The view of the gulf of Genoa is simply indescribably beautiful. In the evening, you should visit one of the taverns in the Old Harbour, or Porto Antico. Here, you can taste plenty of Mediterranean delicacies in the company of other guests and locals and wind the evening down with a glass of wine and music.
