Port entrance of Mahon in Menorca

Coming from the south, you recognize the port entrance by a distinctive tower.

On the third day, you go on sailing to the south-west along the rocky southern coast of Menorca passing by many beautiful bays before you reach Es Caragol. Sailing round the south-eastern cape of Menorca you pass by the uninhabited island Isla del Aire. Afterwards, you take the course to the north-east to the port entrance of Mahon.

The capital of Menorca is situated above the big Port de Mao. Being the most easterly port of Spain and the second biggest natural port of the world after Pearl Harbour in Hawaii, it has long seafarer traditions. Port de Mao is Menorca’s junction for trade and sport shipping. The town was founded 205 B.C. The Romans expanded the town and built the wall around it. The importance of the port town grew over centuries and eventually Mahon became the island capital. The British occupation affected the townscape dramatically in the 18th century. It contributed to the formation of the new architectural style, which mixed the Catalan art nouveau and Anglo-Saxon elements.

The cathedral Santa Maria Major and the museum Museo de Menorca are worth seeing. There are numerous restaurants and cafes along the waterline, in Mahon and in Villa Carlos.
