Island Antigua
The beauty of Antigua is visible at the first sight
Antigua, an Antillean island with an area of 443 square kilometres and a population of 82,000 people, is one of the Leeward Islands. There are regular direct flights from some international airports like Miami, New York or Frankfurt am Main as well as excellent internal connections. Charter tourists heading towards Antigua are with the utmost probability in the exclusive company of famous persons from the music and film industry. Liza Minelli, Roger Moore and Martina Nawratilowa are frequent visitors to Antigua.
In the legendary year 1493, none other than Christopher Columbus discovered the island and named it in honor of the Santa Maria La Antigua Cathedral in Seville. After the Spanish and later the French tried to obtain the island, Antigua was occupied by British colonial rulers. The island became famous as a nearly impregnable naval base English Harbour from which Lord Nelson was acting.
The bigger part of the island is formed by coral reefs, in ist south one can discover traces of a very old volcanism. The highest point of the island, the 405 metres high Boggy Peak, is located here, too. Antigua’s vegetation is dominated by cultivated sugar plants. Broad parts of the island are moulded by secondary forests.
