YACHT CHARTER FIJI ISLANDS / POLINESIA:

Locations & Ports:
Yasawa Ils. / Viti Levu, Raiatea

Sea & Coast:
The Fiji Islands are situated in the south-west of the Pacific Ocean, a little to the west from the international date line. They consist of 320 islands with a total land surface of 18.400 square km, of which only 150 islands are inhabited. The largest island Viti Uvu is the central point of the archipelago. The capital town Suva is situated there, as well as the town Nadi with an international airport. The island Viti Levu is the most populated among Fiji islands. The second biggest island Vanua Levu lies to the south-east from the main island and covers 540 square km, which is about a half size of Viti Levu. Vanua Levu is thinly populated with a landscape full of sugarcane and coconut plantations. The most interesting places for tourists are certainly the small coral islands of the Mamanuca group, outlined by beaches, as well as the Yasawa Islands to the north-west from the main island. Other important islands are Tavenuni, also called “Garden Island” because of its always green vegetation, and Kadavu, which is the centre of the traditional Fijian culture. The rest of the islands are divided into two groups - Lomaiviti and Lau. Lomaiviti is the geographical middle of Fiji and consist of seven islands. Lau, situated in the east of the island state, has several lime or volcanic islands, which are surrounded by reefs.

Winds & Weather:
Situated in the south Pacific, all Fiji islands have an ideal tropical climate. The trade winds blow almost all the year through, providing a cool breeze. The rain season with short and strong rains lasts from the end of November to April. During this period hurricanes and cyclones are highly probable. The temperatures reach a maximum point of 30 degrees Celsius during this time; the climate is hot and humid. The best time for a travel to Fiji is the dry period between May and October with air temperatures between 20 and 26 degrees Celsius. Around the islands of Polynesia, the sailing conditions are usually very good with moderate or cool winds. From April to June as well as in September and October steady trade winds from the south-east blow with the speed of 3-4 Beaufort. The winds are usually stronger in July and August. Within the lagoons you can sail quite relaxed, having ideal sailing conditions without any big waves.
