Minorca – The Island of Peace and Tranquility
Mediterranean calm, crystal-clear water, lonely bays and beaches – time really does seem to move at a slower pace in Minorca. A far cry from the days pirates used to camp here.
Sea & Coast
Taking its name after its larger “sister”, Majorca, Minorca translates into “minor island” and is part of the Balearic group of islands off Spain’s eastern shore. Though being called the small island, Minorca is actually the second largest in the group, surpassing Ibiza and Formentera. Unlike the other islands, Minorca is the least frequented by “party tourists” making it one of the quieter and quainter parts of the archipelago, thus perfect for Yacht Charter adventurers.

With a surface of 702 sqkm and a shoreline 216 km long, Minorca is the northern most island of the Baleares with a general shape that has been described as similar to that of a bean or a kidney. It’s generally a flat island, with the highest altitudes located in the middle (El Toro 358 m, S’Eclusa 267 m and Santa Agueda 260 m). The coastline is full of lagoons and marshes and small springs while also providing a lot of safe anchorage points like port of Maó, famous among the Yacht Charter community.

Unlike some other islands of the Baleares, Minorca is home to some peculiar types of vegetation, including marshland and dunes, as well as a unique system of caves in the southern side of the island (including underwater caves, perfect for exploring Yacht Charter adventurers). The wetlands are located all along the coast and are made up from ponds, marshes and lagoons, best seen at the nature reserves of Es Grau, Addaia, Son Saura and Son Bou, scattered from the northern shore to the southern.

Like the rest of the Baleares, the climate here is Mediterranean, characterized by warm temperatures throughout the year (the annual average is 160 C). The summer averages are 23-26o C and winter averages maintain around the 120 C value. There is a particular wind here called the “tramontana” blowing in winter from the north. Yacht Charter sailors will be pleased to hear that rainfall peaks register during spring and autumn but never go above 450 mm in the southeast and 650 mm in the northeast.

Culture & History
The strategic position of the island within the western Mediterranean meant that it was inhabited from very early on, and there still are a number of ж to this day that are worth visiting. During Roman times, the islands served as staging areas for pirates against traders. Through the centuries, a hoard of peoples came and left from the island but all left their mark o the local culture, some of which can still be seen to this day.

The capital city of Mahon (or Mao) was founded as a Carthaginian settlement on what is even today the second largest natural deep water port in world (the only one larger is Pearl Harbour) but today it acts as the main attraction on the island, popular especially among British Yacht Charter tourists who come here for the fabulous nightlife, cafes and restaurants. The other big city in Minorca is Ciutadella, the former capital under British occupation.

Seamanship & Experience
Like with the rest of the Baleares, any Yacht Charter skipper will find almost perfect sailing conditions here, especially during summer, when there are lots of sunny days with light breezes and little to no rainfall.
Tide flows are something to worry about here like the rest of the Mediterranean and you’ll find that Minorca also has a lot of natural bays and covers where you can safely drop anchor every night, not to mention the numerous marinas built all over the coast that will gladly accommodate your boat for a fee. Just what any Yacht Charter seaman needs.
