Sea & Coast
Welcome to Spain’s largest island, part of the Balearic group of islands, called Majorca, one of the most popular tourist destinations in this part of the Mediterranean and also a desirable Yacht Charter resorts due to its mild climate and favorable sailing conditions.
The name literally translates into “Larger Island” (lat. insula maior) and indeed the rest of the Balearic islands, Ibiza, Formentera and Minorca are all smaller though equally attractive to tourists. The island’s geography is dominated by the Tramuntana mountain range which rises to a maximum altitude of 1445m (Puig Major) in the northern side. For this reason the northern shores are mostly steep cliffs, with 2 larger bays, the Badia de Pollença and the Badia d’Alcudia, where most Yacht Charter sailors hang out. The central part of Mallorca is made up of a plateau which leads to the east into a coast full of small bays while to the south there is a more rocky relief and sandy beaches for those Yacht Charter sun lovers to enjoy.
Vegetation here is more varied than on the other Balearic islands, due to the high mountain range where forests of holm-oak wood thrive but also artificially introduced pine trees. The lower parts of the island are populated by shrub vegetation and lots of culture plants such as almond trees, olive trees and vineyards. Agriculture is the next important activity after Yacht Charter tourism.
Weather aspects are typical of the Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers and mild but stormy winters. The best for the Yacht Charter enthusiast to visit is during the summer months when the island enjoy up to 11 hours of sunshine each day, guaranteeing that golden-brown tan to last you until next year.
Culture & History
The island’s largest city and the one that accounts for almost half of the population living here is Palma (de Mallorca) which was founded by the Romans but the first traces of human settlements go back to the Paleolithic. The Vandals sacked the island after the fall of the Roman Empire, after which it was recovered by the Byzantines, only to fall again at the hands of the Moors. In 1983, Palma became the capital city of the Balearic Islands autonomous region in Spain.
The date this island became a desirable destination for tourists was at the beginning of the 1950s. This is also the time that most of the local general architecture, traditions and social dynamics changed in order to satisfy the ever increasing numbers of visitors landing here every year.
Today, Palma is still the most attractive city in Mallorca, both economically, socially and culturally, but there are also some other interesting places that Yacht Charter seamen might want to check out. These include Ca’n Pastilla, Cala d’Or, El Arenal, Porto Colom, Puerto de Alcudia, Puerto Pollensa and Puerto Portals. As you can see from their names, these are all ports cities so they are definitely worth visiting by anyone with an interest in boats.
