Cagliari – Enjoy the Magnificent View From the Castello

About 160,000 people inhabit Cagliari which shows that the capital of the island has an incomparable special status. There are four-lane roads and tower blocks here that you wouldn’t find in other regions of the island. However, during the siesta, there is a dead silence in the big city of Cagliari, too. The first settlements in the area around Cagliari date from the New Stone Age. In the 8th century B.C., the Carthaginians established “Karali“ which soon became an important harbour because of its strategically favourable location. Later, the place was conquered by the Byzantines, the Pisans and the Aragonese. Today, there are still visible traces of all epochs of Cagliari’s eventful history which you can view on a city walk. The typical port district with dark alleyways and roaming dogs is bordered by the Via Roma in the south, the Largo Felice in the west, the Via Manno in the north, and the Via le Regina Margherita in the east. Those who are fond of Italian food should visit one of Cagliari‘s folksy trattorias  in the evening. In the Via Roma, Boat Charters crews can admire magnificent classical façades. Narrow alleys lead from here to the Old Town with a castle lying at an elevation which is also referred to as Castello. The Pisans began to build this mighty fortress in the 13th century, it was completed in the beginning of the 14th century. This district used to house the nobility and the administration officials which is reflected in its exceptionally beautiful buildings.
