Sardinia Island

Sardinia is a beautiful place for sailing

The second largest island in the Mediterranean Sea is situated 180 kilometres away from the Italian mainland and is inhabited by 1.6 million people. Sardinia looks like a huge  footprint in shape. From its northern end, over the Strait of Bonifacio,  you can get to the French island of Corsica which is located only eleven kilometres away. The bigger part of the population speaks Sardinian, however, Italian is used for official purposes.
The island’s colonization goes far back. In 1979, human remains were found which were 150,000 years old. In the meantime, Sardinia was ruled by the Carthaginian, the Romans, the Byzantines, the Arabs, the Pisans, the Swabians, the Spanish and the Austrians. Only in 1861,  in the course of the Italian unification, did Sardinia’s ruler and the king of Piedmont-Sardinia also become the king of Italy.
Sardinia is a rocky island. Here, one can find grey granite, bright red and crumbly  porphyry, rough primeval basalt, pale sandstone or hollowed limestone formations. Wildly and exuberantly growing macchia dominates the island’s diversified vegetation. However, you can also see pines, cactus pears, olives, eucalypti, cypress trees, cork oaks and durmast oaks as well as wine and fruit. If you take a trip into the interior after a charter yacht cruise, you will also come across wonderful oak and chestnut woods. There is a quite good chance to meet a turtoise! The island’s climate with its hot summers and mild winters is typically Mediterranean. Strong winds are blowing primarily in the winter months. In the summer, the warm Sirocco comes from the Sahara and brings red sand pigments along that descend slowly. Altogether there are 1,850 kilometres of the coastline to sail.  Many European airlines provide flights to Sardinia‘s airports Cagliari, Olbia and Alghero.
