Island Salina

The view of Salina in Italy

Salina, the second largest of the Aeolian, or Lipari Islands, is situated in the Tyrrhenian Sea north of Sicily. The largest island Lipari is approximately two sea miles away. Salina having an area of 27 square kilometres is an island of volcanic origin. Salina owes its characteristic black lava beaches to its both twin volcanoes Monte Fossa della Felci (962 metres) and Monte dei Porri (860 metres) which are still active underground. Compared to its neighbouring islands, Salina is considered as green and fertile. The island’s main town Santa Marina Salina is noticeably trim by Italian standards. In the summer, its cool picturesque lanes are not a bad place at all. The numerous bars and cafes look very inviting. Those who like it quiet should head for Salina. Even though tourism is the main source of income for Salina’s 2,350 inhabitants in the summer months, the island is never overflowing with crowds. By the way, the island’s speciality are the very delicious capers that are sold throughout Italy. Capers are green flower buds which are pickled in a special brine for ten days.
