Yacht Charters in Cuba

With its area of 114524 square kilometres and round 10.3 million inhabitants, Cuba is not only the biggest, but also the most densely populated island in the whole Caribbean. Lying just some 190 km in front of the southrn coast of Florida, the island forms a wide 1250 km long bow from the north-east to the south-east. The 140 km wide straits of Yucatan separates Cuba from the Central American mainland. The straits of Yucatan is a popular and secure sailing area of the Caribbean sea. Most airlines offer scheduled flights to Havanna. Alternatively, you can travel to Havanna by a cruise liner or – if you come from Europe and have a lot of time – even by a cargo ship from Hamburg or Rotterdam. Geographically, the island is the upper part of a plain basement. It has some steep rocks, especially on the southern side. About 30 km in front of the southrn coast of Cuba, the 7200 m deep Cayman trench is situated.

Thanks to the fertile soil, coffee and sugarcane are largely cultivated in Cuba. Typically for tropical fringes, the climate on the island is semi-humid with quite high air humidity. Whereas the lowest temperature value is 7 degrees Celsius, the temperature can reach 40 degrees Celsius in extremely high summer months. The prevailing winds blow from the north or north-east. The average wind speed is 10 knots. Normally, it is a bit less in summer. The precipitation period is from May till October. Tropic storms can arise in late summer and autumn; however, the subtropical climate makes the sailing region attractive all the year through. There are some interesting historical facts. Some historic sources tell us that the first settlements on the island appeared in the 4th century BC. These were the tribes of Siboney and Guanahacabibes. Christopher Columbus first stepped on the island in 1492. This is the beginning of the Spanish colonial reign o Cuba. 1545 sugarcane was brought to Cuba. Havana Cuba

Havana Cuba

Havana

The capital of the island is Havanna, having the population of about 2.5 million people. Making holidays on Cuba, you should be aware of some legal bans. For instance, taking pictures of military facilities, idustrial buildings as well as traffic constructions such as bridges, railways, airfields or ports is strictly forbidden. The capital Havanna is situated on the northern coast of Cuba and has a well protected port. The town is the centre of trade and among all the unqiue culture of the island. Many international artists loved this place. Among them is the American writer Ernest Hemmingway, who spent the bigger part of his life in Havanna.
