The panoramic view of Biograd
Peaceful Biograd is an ideal place for sailing
The town at the Biogradska Riviera, founded in the 10th century, used to be the residence and coronation place of Croatian rulers in the Middle Ages. Nowadays, Biograd is the geographical centre of Croatia.
Biograd na Moru is a perfect starting point for a Yacht Charter cruise to the offshore national park of Kornati with its fascinating world of 150 islands and more than 200 reefs.
Walking through the small old town centre, which counts 5000 inhabitants, the St. John’s Basilica from the 11th century is the first place to visit. The basilica is one of the few buildings that survived the destruction of the town by the Venetians. The museum of local history situated on the beautiful water front with palm trees is worth a visit, too. It shows an opulent collection of items from a merchant ship of the 16th century, which shipwrecked on a reef on its way from Venice to Constantinople. The collection includes many medieval pieces of everyday use. The museum is open every day from 9 a.m. till 12 a.m. as well as from 8 p.m. till 10 p.m. You will easily distinguish the museum building by the big anchor on its main entrance.
Those who are fond of the underwater world should visit the tropicarium just a few blocks down the street. It is home to fishes and reptiles of different species. The tropicarium is open every day from 10 a.m. till 2 p.m. as well as from 6 p.m. till 11 p.m.
There is a great sea water swimming pool on the promenade along the main beach of Biograd. Swimming is free of charge. Following down the promenade, you will pass by a large campsite area with many rustic bars where you can enjoy a cool drink under pine and cypress trees.
There is a sports centre in the pinewood behind the big hotels with over 20 tennis courts. The charge is 3 Euros per hour for a hard court and 5 Euros per hour for a sand court. You can get more information on spot in the hotel “Kornat”.
An excursion to the biggest Croatian lake Vrana lake (Vransko jezero), which lies 8 kilometres away from Biograd, is worthwhile. The bus is leaving at 10:30 from the main bus station of Biograd. The whole lake area is a national park. The lake is situated in a valley and is connected with the open sea by underground chanals. With its huge area of 3,000 hectares and length of 13.5 kilometres, the lake is a biotope for flocks of mullets, eels, catfishes and above all carps.
Returning to Biograd na Moru, the best place to spend the evening, eat and relax is the restaurant “Grill Lovre” in the old town. Delicate dishes of fish and seafood of all kinds are served at affordable prices.
