Eckernförde - Come Down to Enjoy the South Baltic Sea
Since the city enjoys a beautiful scenery, most of the activites here are based on the outdoors. So you'll not only catch a tan, but also lots of exercise, that is, if the delicious local cuisine doesn't get to you first!
General Info
Situated in the north of Germany, in the south Baltic Sea, near other famous Yacht Charter resorts such as Kiel, Fehmarn and Flensburg, Eckernförde is a seaside resort where Germans and other Nordic tourists come to spend time by the sandy beaches that line the shore here.
The name is thought to be of Danish origin, after the name of a castle that was situated near the town, which is possibly derived from the words “squirrel” and “fjord”, a fact reflected by the presence of a squirrel on the town’s coat of arms. Regardless of the origin of the name, the fact that Eckernförde is popular among the Yacht Charter circles remains a certitude.
Travel & Arrival
Being part of the of Germany’s “summer coast” retreat, Eckernförde is easy to travel to, with different means of transportation being available to incoming Yacht Charter tourist groups. There are several airports in the region of varied size, the closest being in Kiel, just 22 km away.
By land, the resort can be reached via car or train, being linked with other resorts on the German Baltic Sea coast. There are several roads leading Yacht Charter travelers into Eckernförde, and several highways running in the region, the E45 and the 76. The train tracks run pretty much parallel to the road and there are several trains making runs along the coast and linking with major cities such as Kiel on the regional line Kiel- Eckernförde-Flensburg.
Avant & Apres Sail
The region of Eckernförde is one filled with rural charm and there are plenty of things to see and do in the outdoors, a thing which should be most welcomed by Yacht Charter adventurers. Among the top attractions here you’ll have to visit the Aschberg peak 98m above sea level near the town of Huttener Ascheffel where an imposing monument of Bismark can be found. Then there’s the Auguste windmill in Gross Wittensee and the Eckernförde Museum which is located downtown and has historical exhibits. Finally, no trip to Eckernförde would be complete without a visit to Castle Louisenlund, constructed in honor of the sister of the Danish King Christian VII.
When it comes to going out on the town for a bite and a little bit of shopping, the locals managed to blend the two together into a lovely experience for Yacht Charter holidaymakers. Here, you can enjoy (and purchase) a wide array of traditional handmade caramels and liquorices. Coffee roasters also play an important role here and the freshly ground beans quickly transform into delicious espressos or macchiatos, much to the delight of visitors.
All these can be a little too much for one day’s walking so the authorities in Eckernförde have decided to assist by installing a little train which runs a sightseeing line through town, much like the old seaside resorts used to have. Either way, it’s a fun way for Yacht Charter sailors to get around town.
Events & Actions
For those coming to Eckernförde, there are a lot of things to see and do, not to mention a lot of events worth checking out. As far as events go, the most interesting for Yacht Charter seamen has to be the Aalregatta Eckernförde, taking place in the last days of May and first days of June. Other festivities include the Kite Festival (April), Motokustika (motorcycle festival in June), the big Pirate Show (August) as well as many other religious and cultural manifestations.
And just because your visit happens to fall in a time when there are no events, don’t go thinking your days will be boring. For Yacht Charter lovers, there are a lot of outdoorsy activities available: climbing the high-wire garden, boat trips, trips into the neighboring region (hiking, cycling, Nordic walking, horseback riding), fishing and diving in the Baltic Sea.
